Director of Communications, Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Monterey, California

Overview
The Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau is a not-for-profit destination marketing organization that serves the $2 billion a year Monterey County tourism industry.

Summary
The Director of Communications oversees the Marketing Communications area of the bureau to include media relations, publications and all MCCVB publicity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Media Relations

  • Identifies and actively pursues media exposure opportunities related to destination marketing of Monterey County, to include development of media strategies, and cultivation of media contacts and story ideas for publication in travel, trade, general press publications broadcast and Internet media and as needed, MCCVB Web site.
  • Conducts and coordinates press visits.
  • Manages MCCVB media database.
  • Liaises with public relations firm.
  • Writes or supervises the writing of all press materials for MCCVB, both marketing-related and local tourism business-related.
  • As directed, oversees imaging inventory for MCCVB. This includes development of video b-roll and produced video projects, still photography and media distribution of all imaging assets.
  • As directed, serves as a major contributor to content of MCCVB Web site
  • Serves as content developer and editor for all MCCVB publications,  including the annual Travel & Meeting Planner, the electronic newsletters, and any additional as assigned

Reports/Administrative Duties

  • Prepares annual department budget, authorizes expenditures and tracks project costs to control expenses of department and all individual programs.
  • Assists in preparation of annual marketing plan, serves as editor of mid-year report and annual report to Monterey County and other jurisdictions.
  • Serves as needed in a community relations capacity for the MCCVB.
  • Supervises the Media Relations Coordinator
  • Attends all MCCVB Board meetings, preparing and presenting reports as requested.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be an excellent and prolific writer, be proficient in editing, computer skills, including database management and word processing (experience with MS Access and MS Excel preferred) PowerPoint and publishing software. Significant Internet content experience, including blogs, podcasts and social marketing a plus. 

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree (B. A.), preferably in journalism or English, and three or more years of related experience. Ideal candidate will have served in at least a mid level management public relations capacity in a corporate or agency environment, or as a writer or editor in a significant media outlet.  Existing relationships with travel media will be a strong plus.

Executive Director, Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor Convention & Visitors Bureau, Unalaska, Alaska

The Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking a results oriented Executive Director to provide dynamic leadership to a well-established nonprofit organization in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor. Unalaska is a coastal community located in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,300 full-time residents with seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

General Description
This executive-level position functions in an administrative capacity for the nonprofit bureau. At the general direction of the five-member Board of Directors, the Executive Director manages and administers finances, grant applications; serves as liaison with local and state agencies; oversees all that all activities of the Bureau, its subsidiaries, and other affiliates are conducted in accordance with the organization’s articles of incorporation, bylaws and formal policies.

Responsibilities
Provides effective leadership and direction while planning, directing, managing and supervising all administrative activities and operations of the Bureau. Develops and administers budgets, all financial functions, grant applications, and administration of membership dues. Determines short and long-range plans, priorities, and marketing plan. Develops policies and procedures. Prepares work schedules, expedites work-flow and makes staffing decisions. Responsible for supervision, evaluations, hiring, staff development, and discipline. Participates in government political process, including City Council meetings or other functions relating to the marketing of the city or businesses. Prepares and presents studies, plans, reports, position papers on matters of concern to the industry, and prepares testimony for presentation to local officials and other governmental bodies through the Board of Directors. Serves as the liaison with committees and other affiliates of the Bureau. Travels to trade shows and marketing meetings related to the visitor industry. Establishes and maintains an ongoing membership solicitation program. Prepares for regular or special board meetings, annual membership drives and committee work. Develops the Bureau’s publications and marketing tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of local attractions, sites and infrastructure or the ability to learn quickly. Proven experience in marketing and interacting with local, state and federal officials. Working knowledge of accounting principals, grant writing and administrative procedures. Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to problem solve and interpersonal skills. Must demonstrate ability to maintain productive working relationships and have experience with employment supervision. Must have experience working with executive boards, councils, the public, staff and volunteers. Fundraising experience preferred. Extensive independent travel required. Must demonstrate sound knowledge of and adherence to Bureau bylaws.

Education and Experience
Minimum of five years progressively responsible business experience. Minimum of two years of experience in the visitor industry. Alaska experience, Unalaska residents, and college degree preferred. Other combinations of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this job may be evaluated on an individual basis.

License and Special Requirements
Valid Alaska driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. As a condition of employment, this position is subject to a successful background check.

Salary
DOE (minimum $43,000); regular full-time position.

Manager, California Welcome Center, Oxnard, Oxnard, California

Summary
Responsible for managing all operations, budget, sponsorships, volunteers and personnel associated with the California Welcome Center, Oxnard. Substantial customer service and management background required. Oversight of facility is by the Oxnard Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the recruitment, training and supervision of staff and volunteers; responsible for processing bi-weekly timesheets and managing payroll hours against budget.
  • Develops specialized visitor information as needed for Oxnard and the Central Coast.
  • Tracks fulfillment of visitor inquiries and produces monthly reports; compiles a monthly report through database software and daily visitor logs.
  • Responsible for quarterly action plans and goals and achieving those goals.
  • Reports visitor center deposits of cash and credit cards from merchandise sales and monthly brochure fees to the President.
  • Prepares monthly reports for OCVB Board of Directors and State of California CWC Program Manager.
  • Attends quarterly CWC Manager meetings required by the State CWC contract.
  • Manages visitor center procedure manual.
  • Assists in working consumer trade shows, visitor information booths at Festivals and special events on behalf of the CWC and/or OCVB.
  • Maintains CWC Oxnard website at www.visitcwc.com
  • Delivers public presentations focused on CWC visitor services/attractions in Oxnard, Ventura County and Central Coast when requested. Additionally, presentations to potential sponsors of the CWC are ongoing throughout the year.
  • Direct responsibility to sell sponsorships for the CWC to achieve budgeted revenue goals for fiscal year. Develops and maintains annual sponsor funding for the CWC.
  • Prepares and reviews annual CWC budget spreadsheet for each fiscal year.
  • Works with and maintains a cohesive working relationship with all other OCVB personnel to ensure a unified and effective team.
  • Maintains relationship with landlord to ensure janitorial and operational services are performed on a routine basis.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Four-year college degree from an academic institution in marketing, communications or related field.
  • Direct senior supervisory/managerial experience in a retail/visitor services environment
  • Volunteer recruitment and training experience
  • Personal commitment to excellence, professionalism and creativity
  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of internet. Background in travel bookings and/or reservation skills
  • PowerPoint presentation skills, Excel and database tracking software knowledge a plus
    Hospitality/tourism experience preferred.

Executive Director, San Luis Obispo County Visitors & Conference Bureau, San Luis Obispo, California

Overview
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is accountable to the President of the Board, the Board of Directors and serves as the primary external spokesperson for the Bureau. The Executive Director works directly with the Board of Directors on policy making and strategy for the organization. Responsible for implementing and coordinating the programs and activities to promote overnight stays; and performs all related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
A. Administration

1. Administer the policies of the VCB as established by the Board of Directors.
2.  Participate in formulation and manages implementation of the VCB’s mission, goals and objectives.
3.  Plan, organize, coordinate, lead and direct staff, programs and activities for the VCB.
4.  Establish administrative policy and procedures.
5.  Recruit, hire, train, set salaries; administer effective personnel programs which include position descriptions, performance standards and performance appraisals.
6.  Supervise activities and staff of the San Luis Obispo County Film Commission.
7.  Maintain effective internal and external public relations.
8.  Ensure VCB involvement in research and education on issues that affect the visitor industry and the community-at-large.
9.  Provide leadership in ensuring industry and VCB collaboration with governments, organizations and business leaders.
10.  Serve as the primary spokesperson for the VCB.
11.  Ensure responsible management of the finances of the VCB, including preparation of an annual budget, accurate financial reporting and long-range forecast of needs.
12.  Ensure the legal integrity of the VCB.
13.  Provide periodic reports to the Board of Directors along with recommendations.
14.  Plans and coordinates meetings of the Board of Directors and elected officials of the VCB.
15. Monitor and assist committees of the Board and VCB members.
16. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Board of Directors in accordance with the bylaws.

B. Financial and Operations

1. Expand the revenue base by achieving long-term financial stability through the identification and development of stable funding sources.
2. Prepare a balanced annual budget that reflects the adopted goals and objectives to the board for approval, including administering the finances of the Bureau and advising the Board on all financial matters through detailed financial reports.
3. Ensure the optimum use of all organizational resources and recommend allocation changes as needed to strengthen the organization.
4. Oversee the adoption of information technology to assist the organization in fulfilling its mission.
5. Consult outside expertise in matters requiring legal, financial or other professional services.

C. Marketing & Promotions

1. Facilitate growth of visitors to San Luis Obispo County by promoting overnight stays and extended stays, utilizing all forms of technology and media.
2. Utilize research to continue to refine the regional marketing plan focusing on the identified niche markets.
3. Increase overnight stays and visitor traffic during identified off-season months by collaborating with hospitality partners to develop and implement a cooperative advertising campaign that effectively positions our region as a visitor destination.
4. Develop an annual marketing plan that supports the organization’s strategic goals including public relations, placed media, advertising campaigns, and the development of visitor publications and services.
5. Provides leadership for the local hotelier and meeting facility industry including; developing a sales program to increase awareness of our destination for conference and group travel business focusing on the small to mid size leisure; recommending tradeshow and marketing programs.
6. Maximizes recruitment of the organization’s membership program by maintaining active involvement, overseeing membership sales and benefits.

E. Board Relations

1. Assist in the recruitment and retention of Board members and participates in maintaining the health and professional growth of the Board.
2. Serve as an ex officio member of all Board committees and taskforces and appoints staff members to serve as board committee liaisons.
3. Oversee administrative preparation for Board and Executive Committee meetings.

Qualifications

  1. Seven to ten years of experience in the destination marketing/management industry in a senior leadership position, preferably in a resort destination is necessary.
  2. Previous managerial, budget and marketing experience is required.
  3. Proven leadership skills and the ability to direct, motivate, and supervise subordinates.
  4. Requires flexibility to manage the complex coordination of multiple departments and Bureau projects.
  5. Position requires thorough knowledge of destination marketing, ability to conceptualize the big picture, communicate and implement strategies of long-range vision.
  6. In-depth knowledge of budget development and interpretation, financial management, and accounting theory.
  7. Excellent oral communication skills to speak one-on-one or to groups.
  8. Excellent written communication skills to write, edit and proof Bureau publications
  9. Confident in complex interactions.
  10. Bachelor’s degree in the area of communication marketing, business or travel and tourism, or equivalent work experience desired.
  11. Time management skills.
  12. Ability to travel independently to domestic and international destinations via commercial airlines.
  13. Must have use of vehicle for use while on Bureau business.
  14. Must be free to travel independently as needed to carry out Bureau goals.
