Strategic Tourism Plan Development Consultant

Overview
Snohomish County government is seeking a qualified individual to update its Strategic Tourism Plan (STP). This is a temporary, full-time position until December 31, 2009. The individual selected will be responsible for developing a strategic five-year vision and recommended plan for Snohomish County Tourism. The STP will be developed in coordination and cooperation with the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau and other local tourism and related organizations and jurisdictions.
The STP when completed will better position Snohomish County’s Tourism industry to compete successfully in regional, national and global markets. It will evaluate and leverage our existing tourism assets and resources and will identify new opportunities to expand the tourism industry, promote and grow new and existing businesses, increase visitors, revenue and profitability. The update will include the relatively new but rapidly growing and potentially lucrative, agri-tourism and eco-tourism businesses and expand our sports and recreation related tourism dollars.
Key elements of the scope of work include:
- Prepare a comprehensive plan, implementation strategy to achieve the project goals and objectives.
- Develop a Tourism Outreach/Resource Assessment strategy and a process for coordinating stakeholder meetings and assigning key strategies and programs.
- Implement an assessment of tourism attributes and infrastructure; initiate stakeholder meetings to begin the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. Coordinate with tourism and related businesses, organizations and jurisdictions.
- Research and evaluate opportunities regionally, nationally and internationally for tourism marketing and industry expansion. Coordinate with local tourism businesses to identify ways to increase revenues and profitability.

Convention Sales Manager

Position Summary
Join the FCVB’s dynamic team of professionals who contribute to the economic well-being of the Fairbanks area by marketing to potential visitors. Seeking an experienced and accomplished sales leader who is progressive, results driven, people oriented and enjoys working in a fast-paced and challenging environment. This outside sales position assists the Director of Meetings and Conventions in Bureau marketing programs involving meetings, conventions, sporting events. This is a functional position that requires the incumbent be someone who is hands-on and rolls up their sleeves to get the job done!
Successful candidate must be detail-oriented and have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Based products.
Assists the Director of Meetings and Conventions in Bureau programs marketing Fairbanks as a destination to in-state, regional and national, international meeting planners and sports event managers. Responsible for sales and marketing activities that promote Fairbanks and Interior Alaska to planners for their meetings, conventions, conferences and sports events. Using standardized metrics, contributes to the overall performance evaluation of the Department.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Contributes to the overall performance measurement goals of the Department.
2. Researches and gathers appropriate information on prospective leads in target markets, especially in-state markets and those particularly suited to northern latitudes; qualifies those leads and plans an effective sales approach
3. Makes quantifiable sales calls to meeting planners both in person and by phone, in existing and new markets.
4. Plans, coordinates and is an active participant in direct sales calls, sales blitzes, FAM tours, site inspections and trade shows as assigned.
5. Produces sales leads and insures the preparation and delivery of bid proposal packets. Arranges for the inclusion of appropriate letters of support.
6. Converts leads into booked business.
7. Schedules the “handover” of booked business to the Convention Services Coordinator.
8. Assists in bid presentations where appropriate.
9. Maintains a well-informed working knowledge of all hotels, attractions and services, both public and private, available in the area; develops and maintains a close working relationship with personnel from all such facilities.
10. Using the Department electronic database, keeps accurate and up-to-date records on all groups that have or may utilize area's meeting facilities.
11. Provides weekly sales activity information to Director of Meetings and Conventions Manager. Prepares a monthly summary for inclusion in Department’s monthly activity report.
12. Represents the Bureau professionally in appropriate local, state and national organizations.
13. As assigned by the President and CEO and/or Director of Meetings and Conventions, assists in the coordination of community wide events.
14. Travels to trade shows, develops and delivers verbal and written presentations to clients. Work with Advertising and Public Relations Department to insure consistency in branding of collateral related to Department marketing.
15. Performs other duties and Bureau projects as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills Requirements:
- Four-year degree from an academic institution in Liberal Arts, Communications, Marketing or other related field/or minimum of two years of experience with a convention bureau, hotel, tourist attraction or other related tourism business
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to travel independently, work nights and weekends. Comfortable with making sales calls
- Ability to exercise judgment and diplomacy in a wide variety of public contact situations
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills including phone presence and public speaking.
- Extensive knowledge of personal computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
- High degree of professionalism
Working Requirements
- Must possess a valid Alaska driver’s license.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Professional dress required.
- Must be able to lift and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Director of Communications

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Oversees the development and implementation of a communications plan to promote West Hollywood as the premier business/leisure destination to the media/tourism industry, local, national and international audience. The Director of Communications reports to the Vice President of Marketing & Sales and the CEO.
- Develop and manage a press release calendar to attract stories on West Hollywood.
- Develop and manage a communication plan yearly that outlines strategic talking points and press trips and fams to target key media audiences.
- Work closely with PR Representatives in UK and Australia
- Work closely with Director of Interactive Marketing and Director of Sales
- Strategize with local PR Partners including hotels and local businesses, Bids, Los Angeles INC, VisitCalifornia, as needed.
- Manage plan for West LA and GoGaySoCal coalitions
- Work closely with City of West Hollywood Media department, Chamber of Commerce, Film Office and other appropriate city offices
- Crisis management and response
- Work with ongoing city events/festivals to better promote West Hollywood as a premier destination
- Oversee and manage all media requests
- Assist New Media Manager as needed
- Oversee creation, design, and structure of print and online press kit
- Oversee budget of Public Relations line item with supervision of VP
- Oversee reporting of all media coverage received in monthly reports
- Writing press releases and media updates
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in marketing or communications. Three years of experience in PR or hospitality-related field. Excellent verbal and written communications. Strong organizational skills needed.
Salary
Full-time position; salary is $45,000 to $50,000 plus bonus and benefits.
